The League of Women Voters of the United States (
LWVUS) provides vision and leadership for the 700+ LWV clubs throughout the country. The national League focuses on the overall country, legislation both in Congress and in the states that impact voters and their rights. Through the network of state leagues, LWVUS is able to provide experts to provide testimony. They also monitor trends, and when states pass laws that negatively affect the ability for any group of voters to exercise their rights as citizens to vote, the League does not hesitate to take legal steps on their behalf.
Part of the work of the LWVUS is advocacy, so the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF) was established to encourage the active and informed participation of citizens in government and to increase understanding of major public policy issues. Through the Educational Fund and grants made to state and local leagues, the Voters Guide publishes the results of nonpartisan educational efforts by Leagues to educate voters on their ballot, the positions of the candidates on those ballots, and where and when they can vote. Printed Voters Guides are distributed locally to libraries and other locales. In addition, VOTE411.org, the online version of the Voters Guide, provides a massive database of races, candidates, and propositions on ballots throughout the country. Voters enter their address and get access to the races and issues that will be on their own ballots based on their location. Volunteer League members throughout the country have collected information about each local candidate (in areas with a League), formulated nonpartisan questions for the Voters Guide and VOTE411, and submitted the results to the two guides.
