Texas is different than other states; you have to register to vote by signing a paper application. It’s not part of your driver’s license and it can’t happen on the same day you vote.

Important Voter Information for Voting & Elections

Register to Vote before February 5 for the March 5 Primary Election

● Texas does not have online voter registration for first-time Texas voters– a registration application is required to be filled out.

● Go online to fill out, print, and sign a registration application from the Hays County Elections website (https://hayscountytx.com/departments/elections/) or from the Secretary of State website. (https://www.votetexas.gov)

● Mail or deliver the application to Voter Registrar Jennifer Doinoff in Hays County (Hays County Elections, 712 South Stagecoach Trail, Suite 1012, San Marcos, TX 78666) in which you reside on or before30 days before Election Day.

● It can take up to 30 days to receive your Voter Registration Certificate.

● Register to vote with the League of Women Voters of Hays County or another voter registration organization. The LWV conducts extensive voter registration efforts at various locations in the county during the year. Check for dates and locations.

● For college student voters living away from home, it is easiest to register and vote at your college residence address. If you vote from home, please make sure to ask for a Ballot by Mail from your home county Elections Clerk in plenty of time to return by election day.

● For voters without a residence, on the registration form in the space for Residence Address, it’s best to put the street address of an agency or shelter where they receive aid. Alternatively, homeless registrants can denote a park, street corner or marina where they live in lieu of a traditional home address. In the space for Mailing Address, they can use a P.O. Box (if they have one) or the shelter or other address where they can receive mail. If those are not available, homeless registrants can arrange for “General Delivery” with the US Postal Service and use that as the Mailing Address.

To be eligible to vote in Texas, you must:

Be a U.S. citizen.
Be 18 years or older on Election Day. (You can register if you are 17 years, 10 months).
Be registered to vote in your county of residence 30 days before Election Day. Students may register and vote in the county they declare as their permanent residence.
Show an accepted form of photo ID when you vote at the polls or submit an absentee ballot in person. See which types of photo ID are accepted for voting www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/need-id.html.
If you have been convicted of a felony, you may register to vote only after you have completed the punishment phase of your conviction, including any terms of incarceration, parole, supervision, or period of probation ordered by the court.
Not be declared mentally incapacitated by a court of law.

How to Register or Update Your Texas Voter Registration Information

Registering to vote for the first time:

To register to vote in Texas, simply complete a voter registration application and return it to your county election office at least 30 days before the upcoming election date. To complete an application, you may:

• Complete an application using the SOS ONLINE VOTER REGISTRATION APPLICATION. Simply fill in the required information, print, sign and mail the completed application directly to your county election office;

• Request a PRINTED APPLICATION. Our office will mail a postage-paid voter registration application to the address provided; OR
• Contact or visit your local HAYS COUNTY VOTER REGISTRAR (or other county if applicable) to complete the voter registration process.

Update your voter registration information online

Whether you’ve recently moved or changed your name, you can now update all your information on your voter registration record through our portal on Texas.gov.

If your voter registration record is on ‘suspense,’ it means your county of registration has received information that you no longer live at the address on your current voter registration record. You can use the link above to update your address or information on your voter registration record.

**NOTE: To update your voter registration, you will need your Voter Unique Identifier (VUID) to log in to the Texas.gov portal. You can find your VUID by visiting the Texas SOS My Voter Portal, in which you can enter your Name, County, Date of Birth and ZIP code to display your voter registration information.

I’m already registered! How do I update my voter registration?

While your first-time voter registration in Texas cannot be done online and MUST be signed by you in person, to update your address after a move or to change your name you may do that through the Texas Secretary of State's Voter Name and Address Changes web pages.

•   You will need your
      ·   Texas Drivers License or Texas Personal ID
      ·   Your Social Security number.
      ·   Voter Registration Card VUID (Voter Unique Identifier) number.
Find your VUID number on your voter registration card, at "Am I Registered" at VoteTexas.gov, or by calling your county voter registrar.
•   Update your driver's license online and your voter registration at the same time!
•   Or fill out a new paper voter registration application!

Login and continue.

The third page allows you to change your name, address, or both. Be sure to click Change after entering the new information.

Note the instruction: Do not submit a business address, P.O. Box, or Rural Route as your Residence Address

If you only have a Post Office Box or Rural Route for delivery of your mail, updating your registration online may void your effort to update your registration. Call the Elections Department, 512-393-7310, for directions on how you can update your registration through their office.

Homeless Voter Registration

Citizens who are homeless but are otherwise eligible to vote may register using the street address of an agency that is providing assistance, and may use a post office box (if they have one) for their mailing address.
