Register to Vote

Texas is different than other states; you have to register to vote by signing a paper application. It’s not part of your driver’s license and it can’t happen on the same day you vote.

To be eligible to vote in Texas, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be 18 years or older on Election Day.
  • Be registered to vote in your county of residence 30 days before Election Day. Students may register and vote in the county they declare as their permanent residence.
  • Show an accepted form of photo ID when you vote at the polls or submit an absentee ballot in person. See which types of photo ID are accepted for voting www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/need-id.html.
  • Not be a convicted felon who is on probation, parole, or incarcerated. Once a felon’s sentence is completely served, voting rights are restored.
  • Not be declared mentally incapacitated by a court of law.

How to Register to Vote in Texas - Two Ways

Completely on paper  or  Start online, but must finish by signing paper
 


New registrations must be postmarked by deadline to vote in the next election. See Election Dates.

Register to Vote completely on Paper

  1.  Pick up a Texas Voter Registration Application card at libraries, post offices, driver’s licenses offices, the Hays County Elections Department, or at voter registration drives shown on the right.
  2. Fill in the information on the Application card. You must include your birth date and then either the last four digits of your social security number or your Texas State driver's license or ID Number.
  3. Sign the Application card. Texas does not allow online submission of voter registration, so you must print any application you start online.
  4. Submit the Application card
    1. If your application is WHITE, mail or take the application to the Hays County Elections Department. Hays County Election’s address is shown on the form.
    2. If your application is YELLOW, give it to any Volunteer Deputy Register (VDR) of Hays County, including Hays County League of Women Voters volunteers who have been deputized by Hays County to register new voters. The VDR will submit it to the Hays County Election Department for you.

  1. Go to Register2vote.org.
  2. Fill in the information on the Application. You must include your birth date and then either the last four digits of your social security number or your Texas State driver's license or ID Number.
  3. Register2Vote will mail your completed application to you, so you can review it and sign it. Texas does not allow online submission of voter registration. Write in  the last four digits of your social security number or your Texas State driver's license or ID Number if it is not shown.
  4. Mail your Application in envelope provided. No postage needed.

Or... If you have a printer

 

  1. Type your information into the SOS ONLINE VOTER REGISTRATION APPLICATION on the Texas Secretary of State's website. You must include your birth date and then either the last four digits of your social security number or your Texas State driver's license or ID Number.
  2. Print the application.
  3. Sign the Application. Texas does not allow online submission of voter registration,
  4. Submit your application in person or use an envelope and stamp to mail the application. Hays County Election’s address is shown on the form.
