Volunteer Opportunities with the Hays County LWV

Candidate Forums & Debates

Candidate Forums and Debate Volunteers: Part of our goal is to educate our members and the public on the issues we face in the voting booth. To assist with that goal, we need volunteers to moderate forums and debates throughout the year, as well as craft meaningful questions to pose to candidates during those events.

Communications & Technology

Social Media Manager (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter): Volunteers who are tech savvy, interested in social media or have experience in social media are needed to manage day-to-day posts for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and help craft the social media strategy!

Voter Registration

Voter registration is a vital and ongoing activity of the League. Volunteer Deputized Registrars (VDRs) are a crucial part of that. But other assistance is invaluable as well and VDRs can work in tandem with those who are not certified VDRs as well.

To become a Volunteer Deputized Registrar, there are a few steps. For one thing, VDRs study, take a test, and are certified by the county Elections Office.  As a key activity of the League, we encourage members to be certified. To find out what is involved, see our separate page on being a VDR.

“We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.”
— Thomas Jefferson

“Someone struggled for your right to vote. Use it.”
— Susan B. Anthony

“It's not enough to just want change ... You have to go and make change by voting."
— Taylor Swift, singer-songwriter and country-pop star

Observer Corps

This new initiative sets the goal of having a League representative present at the meetings of local governmental bodies, both to observe the actions taken at the meeting and to report on the issues considered at the meeting – particularly from the perspective of the League's mission. Learn more about the Observer Corps here.

Educational Programs

The League hosts a variety of educational programs on topics related to voting rights, redistricting, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and bills impacting voting that are under consideration by the Texas Legislature during the current session. The Program Committee typically also  allows the League to study issues in depth and develop a consensus position, bringing concerns to the surface for consideration by the wider League. Some of the priorities of the Hays County League can be found on our Issues page.

Ad Hoc Committees

From time to time, short-term committees form around particular projects. The recent Redistricting Committee, and before that the Census Committee, were two of those dealing with issues that affect voting and access. Issues such as those recur every ten years while others arise during the course of circumstances.

Event Data Report Form

We ask volunteers to complete an Event Data Report after all volunteer activities, including registering voters, educational programs, and Observer Corps reporting. By reporting in a timely way, volunteers help our League compile the information and document for the Texas and U.S. Leagues the work and accomplishments of the League of Women Voters of Hays County and ensure nothing is forgotten or overlooked.
