Registering to Vote in Hays County

You have options:

• Download the Voter Registration Application, complete it, and mail it to the address shown.

• Go register at the Elections Office, in the Hays County Government Center, 712 South Stagecoach Trail, Suite 1012, San Marcos, TX 78666.

• Or register in person on the Quad – or during Freshman Orientation in front of the Alkek Library –at Texas State University with any of the certified Volunteer Deputy Registrars (VDRs) who can answer any questions you may have. (VDRs can be found at booths there often during the period of time before the end of voter registration.)

• Many voter registration opportunities will be available at local libraries and other events.

But what if I'm already registered back home?

You can only vote once of course, but your new voter registration certificate allows you to vote in Hays County.

I don't know how to find out about the candidates or the issues on the ballot.

The League of Women Voters is here to help.

• Voters Guides (online or in print). VOTE411 is the League's online Voters Guide. Print versions can be found at the local public library and as inserts in various Hays County newspapers the week before Early Voting begins. VOTE411/Voters Guide candidate questions are reprinted from what candidates submit with no changes and questions are worded neutrally in order to avoid any appearance of attempting to influence voters to favor or oppose a particular candidate.
• Candidate Forums. The League invites all candidates for a specific office (Republican and Democratic party candidates) to participate in a public forum to allow you to vet the candidates.. Questions are designed to give you, the voter, insight into the candidate and their positions, while questions scrupulously avoid any attempt to influence your voting choice. Forums are recorded and recordings are made available in the Resources section of this website.
• Sample ballots are available on the Elections Office Elections Office with all the races and candidates on the ballot.

Note that minor party candidates are selected for the ballot at a party convention. If a minor candidate is on the ballot for a particular race, the sample ballot is the best source of that information. It is not typically included in VOTE411 or Voters Guides.

Please note: Applications for Ballot by Mail are only available from the Elections Administrator by specific request. Political parties may legally send them out without a request.

Ask about getting a  ballot by mail by emailing  ballotbymail@co.hays.tx.us.
