State Elections

State elections include races for the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government.

Legislative Branch

State-level races include your legislative representatives:

•  The House of Representatives race for your district  – All 150 representatives are up for election (or re-election) every two years.

•  State Senators. Following redistricting, which happened in 2021, all 31 state senators are up for election to either a two-year or four-year term.

Executive Branch

The statewide executive branch offices include:
•  Governor
•  Lieutenant Governor
•  Attorney General

Those elections take place in midterm elections, that is, even years that are not presidential election years - four-year terms, elected during mid-term election years.

Other statewide offices in Texas include:

Texas Railroad Commission (which, unlike its name suggests, actually regulates the oil and gas industry) - three commissioners serve six year staggered terms, with one seat up for election each even-numbered year. It's the state agency that regulates the oil and gas industry, gas utilities, pipeline safety, safety in the liquefied petroleum gas industry, and surface coal and uranium mining.

State Board of Education (SBOE) members represent any of 15 districts for four-year terms. In 2022. All 15 SBOE seats will be on the ballot in 2022 because of redistricting. Members will be elected to either two-year or four-year terms. The SBOE sets policies and standards for Texas public schools, curriculum and graduation standards,

Judicial Branch

Composed of the chief justice and eight justices, the Supreme Court of Texas is the court of last resort for civil matters in the state.

Three of the members of the Texas Supreme Court are up in 2022:
Place 3, Place 5, and Place 9 (6 yr. term)

The Court of Criminal Appeals is Texas' highest court for criminal cases. The Court consists of a Presiding Judge and eight Judges. They are elected by the voters of the entire state, and they hold their offices for terms of six years).

Courts of Appeal

There are 14 Appeals Courts in Texas each presided over by a Chief Justice with at least two other justices serving with them.
