Candidates' Campaign Finances

 Candidate Fundraising and Expenditures

Candidate "electability" is simply how likely it is that the candidate can run for elected office and win. A number of qualities are involved in electability. They include:

  • name recognition
  • reputation
  • experience
  • likability
  • funding
  • speaking ability
  • appearance
  • grasp of issues and possible solutions

  • New online tools make it possible to easily compare he amount of money a candidate has raised, been loaned, and has spent. Looking at their comparative financial strength can help narrow down your choices. Comparing their campaign finances is especially helpful in the primary election where there are several candidates to consider.

Perhaps some of those primary candidates have raised such a comparatively small an amount that means it will be virtually impossible to win a statewide election or in a large district that covers multiple counties. Their electability is not great, so you may want to focus on deciding who may be electable in that race.

Money is, of course, not the only important factor and sometimes candidates with less money can win. However, in a state as large as Texas, to educate voters about a particular candidate across multiple counties or the entire state takes a certain level of finances.

    TransparencyUSA

TransparencyUSA.org is a new tool that makes comparing candidates' fundraising, expenditures, cash on hand, and any possible debt easy. Find races by whether they are Statewide races, Texas House, or Texas Senate races. Clicking on the race name will bring up the list of candidates by party and show the contributions they have received, the loans they have taken out or given their campaign, and their expenditures. You'll also see if a given candidate is active or has been disqualified or has withdrawn.

Click on a candidate's name and you will see a profile of that candidate's finances, including their top donors and top expenditures.

Not included in TransparencyUSA data are candidates for federal office: president, U.S. Senate, or U.S. House of Representatives.

    Federal Election Commission

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) allows you to search for Campaign Finance Data by candidate name (if they are or have run for federal office) or by zip code to find those running to represent you.
Please note: Applications for Ballot by Mail are only available from the Elections Administrator by specific request. Political parties may legally send them out without a request.
